Please bear with me here, I didn't want lots of info on here that would strain the eyes but I feel it is very important info for someone who is serious about becoming a locksmith.

The below comments are factual and represent a bulk of the market regarding locksmithing and training bodies.

THE TRAINING.

I was taught many years ago in a shop environment which had been in existence for 400 years. My main tutor was a chap close to retirement who had served the locksmithing industry for 50 years in Canada and the UK.

This type of training is now gone (unless you are extremely lucky). I was taught from the beginning and this is how I teach.
We start by looking and examining how locks work in great detail (hands on, not just looking at pictures like most courses). You cannot just put a pick in a student’s hand and put it into the lock and make them open it, well you can with locks that have been doctored and using a lot of luck.
You will have a great understanding of the locks you are opening before you touch a pick.
You will start with hand picks and become confident with them and will not need to rely on and electric tool.
You will open real locks starting with easy ones and working up to real anti-pick pins in 5 and 6 pin cylinders.
This pattern is the same throughout the course including fitting locks with a drill and drill bit and not expensive mortice jigs (although we have them and demonstrate them).
We have all the expensive gear whether it be electric or manual and we do teach you with them, but if these are all you can use (or in most cases the only things you have been taught) and it breaks or the battery dies you are left in a really bad place....outside. The truth is most people cannot afford the very expensive gear to get started, they also don't realise that you can start trading with a small budget...START SMALL - GROW SLOW!

I have one main course which includes all you need to know to start trading as a commercial & domestic locksmith with confidence.
